Students studying the BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology at Strode College produce a large scale performance each year that challenges their creativity and develops their technical skills in the use of music software and hardware. This year they are performing a live soundtrack to a silent film.
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is a silent masterpiece of German expressionist cinema that uses painted, distorted sets to create a weird world where insanity and reality mix with a surprising final twist. The soundtrack will draw from a wide range of modern musical influences and will be improvised live using Decks, software electronics, guitars, drums and anything else we can get hold of.

Strode College Music Technology students launched two more compilation albums this month on Strode’s very own label, SC Records. 'Sound on Sound vol.2' showcases the best electronic music productions from Dubstep to Hiphop, while the second album ‘Strode Live Sessions vol.1’ focuses on live bands and artists recorded and produced in the college sound studios. Both albums are available for free download from www.strodecollege.bandcamp.com
This project requires students to record and produce music for commercial use as part of their BTEC Music Technology course. For this project they also had to design their own CD covers and create promotional material including videos and posters. The launch party held on Thursday 31st of March is yearly event to give the students a chance to show all the work they have done to compose, record, produce and promote their music.
The live event was very well attended including Allan Trinder from Glastonbury FM radio. It featured live performances from Rob Ayton, aka ‘A-Tone’, George Dunscombe, aka Diatonic EFX, Hollie Trevis, Ollie Proud, Chelsea Paget and the band ‘Jack Flash.’ The combination of DJ sets, music software and live acts created an amazing vibe to the event.
Each student had their online music product on display at the event via laptops and those that attended were asked rate the work they had created. Some have composed and produced an E.P. of their own work while others have recorded and produced an artist or band. Some of the many great producers to check out:
Felix Rayment from Wells, aka ‘Staro’ who has produced some very impressive Dubstep and has been getting some interest from a number of ‘youtube’ channels. Shelley Peters from Evercreech who has recorded a number of bands in the studio and produced some impressive finished products. Sam Ballet from Yeovil aka ‘Supa Nin’ who has composed his own work and recorded and produced a live band in the studio. Scott Linton from Somerton who has released two of his own albums on the ‘bandcamp’ website under the name ‘Sclintsoul’ Sophie Chouings from Glastonbury who has recorded and produced Dan Canvin. Remixes of this work were produced and relaesed by Cris Orwin from Stoke Sub Hamdon. Rob Ayton from Shepton Mallet has produced an E.P. of his own electronic music under the name ‘A-Tone.’
Adrian Smith, Strode Music Technology Lecturer, said: "The launch of the record label last year has given the students a real boost. The quality of the music they have produced this year is outstanding and it is good to see that they are getting recognition outside the college especially online.”
