BTEC Music Technology - Extended Diploma
If you are interested in creative music making, studio technology, sound engineering and music performance then this course is for you. This course offers a wide range of practical skills, creative skills and technical knowledge so musicians, DJs, producers, technicians, engineers and composers can take the next step into the music industry or a place at university.
You will study many related subject areas designed to start developing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the music industry. These include music listening skills, music software, composing and performance using music technology, studio recording, synthesis, sampling, acoustics, live sound engineering, sound design for film and TV, Music Video Production and Graphic Design.
The second year is based much on real world music projects. The main project involves creating and marketing your own musical product. This will involve organising promotional events and establishing an online presence. You will also organise a launch party which will be covered by local radio, local press and be attended by people in the music industry. This is a real opportunity to showcase your music performance, composition and production skills.
Practical assignments will be accompanied by written work to establish understanding of the process involved. Here are some examples of the assignments you may be asked to complete
• Remix a TV theme using samples and FX
• Organise a launch party for a CD release
• Explain sound equipment for music venues
• Build a sampled drum kit in music software
• Compose a sound track for a TV advert
• Perform your composition using technology
• Write about the history of popular music
It is important to consider what this course has to offer and whether it fits in with your plans as a musician, sound engineer or music producer. These are some of the important things that you will gain from this course.

Many of our students go on to study at degree level. Here are some of the universities they go to; Bath Spa University, Glamorgan University, ACM London, BIM, Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, University of Westminster, UWE Bristol, University of Hertfordshire and LIPA. Some students have gained work experience in the industry and continue to work on their own music production.
